The troop conducts elections for senior patrol leader and patrol leaders every six months. The senior patrol leader then appoints his assistant senior patrol leader(s) and the troop guide, and each patrol leader appoints his assistant patrol leader.
Scouts also fulfill numerous supporting positions of responsibility. These include quartermaster, scribe, librarian, historian, webmaster, chaplain’s aide, troop O.A. representative, and outdoor ethics guide. The senior patrol leader appoints scouts to these positions with the approval of the scoutmaster. Scouts may also serve as den chiefs for nearby Cub Scout packs, and the scoutmaster occasionally appoints older scouts as junior assistant scoutmasters.
Scouts working toward Star, Life, and Eagle Scout ranks need to serve in one of these positions of responsibility (except assistant patrol leader) as one of their requirements. A scout who needs a position of responsibility for his next rank should participate in the next troop election or speak to his SPL or scoutmaster about one of the support staff positions.
