Last week, Troop 344 attended Camp Gamble at S-F Scout Ranch. We had excellent attendance- over 30 scouts came, including our Senior Patrol and a large number of new scouts. Each day, our scouts enjoyed traditional patrol cooking while participating in a variety of merit badge classes and other amazing activities. Here are some highlights of the week:
-Troop 344 saved the Wednesday night gaga ball competition by bailing out the gaga pit using only shovels and Tupperware containers
-Troop 344 placed in the following events at the Wednesday Beach Luau:
- Gaga Ball – Josh King 1st Place
- Glow Stick Retrieve – Cooper Keys 2nd Place
- Iceberg Climb – Jake Page 2nd Place
- Limbo Competition – Brooks Schilders 1st Place
- Matchstick Relay – Troop 344 team 2nd Place
- Spikeball Tournament- Troop 344 team 2nd Place
-Several boys completed a service project to build a new trail for Camp Gamble
-Boys in the new scout patrol caught fish and cleaned and cooked them with Mr. Keys’ help
-James Karslake, Zach Barrett, Clayton Seeger and Mrs. Karslake were inducted into the Order of the Arrow at the Thursday Tap Out ceremony
-The troop huddled in the camp Commissary for over an hour on Friday sheltering from a severe thunderstorm. The scouts entertained themselves with cards and games.
-Despite the lack of good dry wood, the troop had its own campfire on Friday thanks to our scouts’ adept fire-building skills.
-Mr. Keys was trained to join us as a new Assistant Scout Master.
-Troop 344 earned the Campers of Honor award for performing a service project and satisfying other requirements of good “campership.”
Thanks to Tom Seeger, Janine Schilders, Vanessa Lange, Phil Stanton (Jr.), Will Hawkins, Eric Biernacki, Alex Kanyok and John King for serving as adult chaperones during the week! Special thanks to our Assistant Scoutmasters, Travis Keys and Christine Karslake, who stayed the entire time! Everyone had a blast, and we look forward to attending Camp Gamble again next year!
