It was a cold morning on February 22nd, the day of our annual Urban Hike around downtown St. Louis. We started from Soulard Market and made our way north, stopping at iconic places like Busch Stadium, the Old Cathedral, and, of course, the Arch. After visiting the Arch we went to the Soldier’s Memorial where they had a new special exhibit about the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, also known as the “Ghost Army” whose primary goal was to deceive the enemy by using inflatable tanks and artillery, sound trucks, and fake radio communications. Then we made our back to Soulard to stop for lunch at Boggart’s for a delicious barbecue lunch. After a filling lunch, we made our way to Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Fun fact: Anheuser-Busch made a non-alcoholic cereal beverage that tasted like beer, called Bevo, to survive prohibition. We also stopped by Gus’ Pretzel Shop on our way back to Soulard Market for a quick snack break. Once we had gotten back to Soulard, we had walked an impressive 11.5 miles, and all went home to warm up and relax our tired legs.
