(Story by Shreyas) On June 15, our very own Troop 344 made its way down to sunny Camp Gamble at the S-F Scout Ranch. As always, the troop stayed at the Francis Campsite within Gamble. This year, we shared the site with another troop. In total, 28 Scouts and 9 adult leaders attended.
Due to uneven attendance across patrols, three patrols were formed for camp. The Flames and Crusading Phoenixes combined, as did the Night Arrows and Aviating Falcons. The Thunderbolts stayed together. Starting Monday, each patrol was responsible for cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner for themselves and three adults.
As a tradition, the troop holds an annual patrol competition, awarding bragging rights to the patrol with the cleanest campsite and best meals. This year, the Flames won the competition.
Most Scouts attended Merit Badge classes, with plenty of free time to fish, socialize, and enjoy other activities. Evening events included the Opening Campfire, a (very ironically) rained-out Water Carnival, Parents Night, the Order of the Arrow Ceremony, and the Closing Campfire. On Tuesday, the troop also spent time at Huck’s Cove swimming and having fun.
Three Scouts were elected into the Order of the Arrow this year: Parker Cabbabe, Arin Navjith, and Darren Lee.
Our very own Brandon Barrett also served on Camp Gamble’s staff this year as a counselor.
Although the week started off wet and rainy, the weather soon cleared, giving way to beautiful days. Everyone agreed that this year’s camp was an incredible experience—and a meaningful farewell to our older Scouts who are moving on from the troop.
